Sports at Hopewell
Hopewell is one of 12 churches in the area that participates in the year-round Downingtown Area Christian Sport League, which includes volleyball, basketball, and softball. The objective of the sports league is to offer an opportunity for athletic competition for participating churches' members (or associates) based upon Christian fellowship. We view the sports program as simply another small group within the church body, with an emphasis on athletics.
Hopewell has been very successful over the years in its athletic endeavors. With two levels of competition, there's something for everyone, no matter the skill or interest level. Competition is offered in two brackets: Competitive (A League) for more serious players; and Recreation (B League), where games are played strictly in the spirit of fun. This format follows through in each of the three sports seasons.
Basketball: Our Men's basketball begins in early January with some practices starting late in December. We may not be able to field a team this year if we do not have some new players come out. This is a great small group ministry based on Christian fellowship through sports (and the only small group where you get to sweat!). Please consider playing with us this year. Call Ken Lehman or Dick Pry if you are interested.
Softball: Softball kicks off the summer in May, with games played at six or seven fields in our immediate area. Hopewell's "A" team has won the league championship two years in a row.
Volleyball: Coed volleyball begins in September and runs through early December. Matches are played at Hopewell and at East Brandywine Baptist Church.
